Cody Cameron, a Marine stationed in Jacksonville, N.C., got burned when he bought a used car. He paid $17,000 last year for a 2004 Nissan 350-Z with 60,000 miles on it. He figured the car would last him a long time. It didn’t.

“I drove the vehicle for about two weeks. And one day all of the wheel studs on the left rear tire just popped off and the tire took off down the road,” he recalls.

He was able to get the dealership to pay for the repairs. But about a week later, the studs broke again. This time they refused to pay.

Cameron couldn’t afford the repair work, so he took the car to another dealer, hoping to get some money for a trade-in. That’s when he discovered his car had been in a wreck. The AutoCheck report showed extensive damage to the left side of the vehicle.

Good article Ziyulu..Thanks!

Things haven't changed as many poster have pointed out regardless of the war.

Have you ever noticed the plethora of PayDay Loan companies clustered around the gates of Military Bases? This is the other heinous crime we frequently don't talk about. Luring in the young recruit with NO budgeting skills at 100+ percent interest. They know they will get their money as these Shylocks simply go to the youngsters Command for a garnishment of wages. Training in boot camp about not only shady car dealers AND PayDay Loan sharks might prevent some of this from happening.

It is sad how many prey on the military. Granted, he should have researched the car, but the dealer saw him coming from miles away.

Should be a law everywhere that lets people return the vehicle within 30 days and get their money back if they find something wrong with the vehicle.

And I'll bet car dealers probably complain when someone takes them for a ride on something.

I would hope military personnel so affected by such scams would pay a visit to the owners home.

Carfax and kbb.com (Kelley Blue Book's site) can save a world of grief. Both companies came to be because of shameless, scummy salespeople.

I feel bad for the guy, but you've got to do the homework. Used car dealers are right down there with ambulance chasing lawyers. Can't trust anything they tell you.

There has been a certain element enaged in this kind of stuff for years. It was going on as far back as my time in the military and before. When I was in the Army many years ago there were car dealers located around military bases (we knew who they were) specifically catering to soldiers. They sold "junkers" at high prices with flaky payment terms. They financed the sale and credit didn't much matter. The portion of your check that didn't go into paying for the "wreck" went to trying to keep it running. Many times the dealer would get the car back when the buyer got shipped to another base or overseas and left the car. Everyone knew the "game" but you did what you needed to do if you wanted to have transportation while you were there.

Same game, different era.

Seems all you see right outside any base gates are used car dealers loaded with cars to attract 18 year olds.

A shame to see nothing has changed. When I was there back in the 80's the locals use to screw the Marines everytime they could. So much for support our troops.

the verification costs of having a used car verified is well worth the cost... this should be a mandatory step in all used car sales...
