Things haven't changed as many poster have pointed out regardless of the war. Have you ever noticed the plethora of PayDay Loan companies clustered around the gates of Military Bases? This is the other heinous crime we frequently don't talk about. Luring in the young recruit with NO budgeting skills at 100+ percent interest. They know they will get their money as these Shylocks simply go to the youngsters Command for a garnishment of wages. Training in boot camp about not only shady car dealers AND PayDay Loan sharks might prevent some of this from happening.

It was going on as far back as my time in the military and before. When I was in the Army many years ago there were car dealers located around military bases (we knew who they were) specifically catering to soldiers. They sold "junkers" at high prices with flaky payment terms. They financed the sale and credit didn't much matter. The portion of your check that didn't go into paying for the "wreck" went to trying to keep it running. Many times the dealer would get the car back when the buyer got shipped to another base or overseas and left the car. Everyone knew the "game" but you did what you needed to do if you wanted to have transportation while you were there. Same game, different era.
