Michigan Oil Spill Highlights Need for Safety Overhaul

Oilprice.com -- Canadian pipeline company Enbridge is in the hot seat for an oil spill from a ruptured line in southern Michigan. Crews in Marshall, Mich., are still working to clean up contaminated areas nearly two years after Line 6B burst open, dumping about 20,000 barrels of so-called tar sands oil into the Kalamazoo River and surrounding waters. A report from the NTSB suggests operators in Canada interpreted the pressure drop associated with the spill incorrectly and continued pumping oil through the line after it broke open. Last month, Enbridge said it was spending billions of dollars to upgrade its pipeline networks in the region. Some of that effort won't require new pipe at all, however, opening the door to questions about its operational safeguards.

Kar: otoh, it highlights the problems such pipelines inherently bring with them.

Enbridge now, TransCanada next time. And no one will pay for the cleanup but the US taxpayers.

Not a great endorsement for Enbridge being the alternative to Keystone is it? Or for building a pipeline to Kititat?

A two year old oil spill and still cleaning the spill? Need to move much faster in the cleanup efforts!
Better controls, sensors, procedures and safeguards needed so human error does not interpret current conditions incorrectly. Use the best materials possible, with the best workmanship obtainable. No more oil or fuel spills into waterways or on land surfaces, protect the pipeline and the area at all costs. Regular on site safety and condition inspections required for the pipeline operation.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

This is a 2 year old spill in the Kalamazoo River. It has yet not been cleaned up.

You gotta ask yourself....HOW long it it gonna take? Imagine if this spill had happened in Nebraska with the proposed Keystone Pipeline. What condition would the Ogallala aquifer used for irrigation and drinking water in several States be after 2 years.

Mustache 33 has a good idea!

Most pipeline operators do know the difference. Its the few without real experience that interpret it incorrectly.

They should come up with something so they know the difference between a leak and low pump presure.

Despite all their procedures and regulations, they are essentially not followed and nobody is held responsible. The shift supervisor who failed to identify the loss of pressure as a leak should be fired (or at least placed on permanent probation), but the local law enforcement or 911 dispatchers share in the blame by not notifying Enbridge of the leak.

Yup. Guilty Enbridge is of buying up old rusty pipes from the US. I thought we in Canada were smarter.

I got 15 miles miles highway 2 up to Calgary freshly paved over the last 3 weeks. I wonder how many barrels of oil wash up when it rains big time tomorrow afternoon.

Being born with dry skin, I feel more than most.My skin burns more yet, if you all die from unseen toxins giving you cancer, I won't care. You are all "Sheeple" herded by the media into a certain why of thinking.

part of the procedure should be... everytime something irresponsible like this that happens, year-end bonuses should be cancelled for the top 10 decision-maker executives, and use the money to repair the problem and part should be donated to Greenpeace, and in-part to the community emergency fund.

Keep the oil flowing but just clean up the mess. Mo method of transportation is perfect. Trains and cars get in accidents, ships sink, pipes burst etc

This seems to be a rare pipeline failure. The vast majority quietly operate without incident.

Is Enbridge paying for the clean up costs... fully? Mistakes must be learned from. Some people think that regulations have magic powers and can prevent fraud, accidents, and mistakes. Regulations didn't stop Bernie Maddof, nor BP's oil spill in the Gulf.
