U.S. Exempts Japan, 10 EU Nations From Iran Oil Sanctions

Bloomberg -- The Obama administration is sending a message to major buyers of Iranian oil -- in particular China, India and South Korea -- that they can avoid new U.S. sanctions by curtailing their imports of Iranian crude by the end of June, several U.S. officials said.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced yesterday that an “initial group” of countries -- Japan and 10 European Union nations -- have “significantly reduced” their Iranian oil purchases and thus qualified for an exemption from sanctions for a renewable period of 180 days under the law.

The U.S. didn’t grant waivers to China (CCCIIQIR), the leading importer of Iranian crude in the first half of last year, or to India and South Korea, which were the third- and fourth-largest buyers, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

China can't do w/out oil. And the sanctions drive the price down for China. In order to survive, they can't do anything else, but buy it cheaply.

Either you have a sanction or don't. This exemption is plain stupid. Bad call Mr. President.

There will be always someone to buy Iran's oil if the prices are slightly lower than that in the International market.

That policy drives up the price of oil and gasoline. Nationalize Iran to drive down oil prices!

iran is not gonna be hurt a bit really by anything we do or say, p.o.-ed yes but stopped, no. the best stand we can take is to return to a way of manufacturing and doing business that (sorry to say) government, sanctions, boycotts, tariffs (or lack thereof)has pretty well made darn near impossible. it didn't start with obama but this nation needs to get out and vote and make sure it ends with him while we still have a chance to stay a great nation in our own right...

big_mac64, if you have kept up with US consumption news, you are using less only because you are forced to use less by higher prices for gasoline, but you are still using more than you need to use.

Just because you are using less than you did 10 years ago doesn't excuse the amount that you still use.

It is our RIGHT to NOT give ANY aid to ANY of those countries. No money, no food, no support no technology no vacation destinations! NO NOTHIN'.
And,
if perchance this UNITED STATES of AMERICA was at all involved in saving their a$$ from destruction, annihilation, take over, assault or any other form of action where the UNITED STATES of AMERICA and to come to their sorry a$$ aide, we MUST receive full REPAYMENT of our expenses which cost the UNITED STATES of AMERICA citizens in money, supplies, armament and lives.

I read an article the other day on google when I was scrolling through Real estate ( homes )owned by banks in U.S.and they stated the U.S. gov't borrows 2 billion a day from China and pays Pakistan 12 billion a year to be a democracy.
Does anyone think this is true?

njerald said "Another clueless Marxist B O regime decision"

Another clueless comment. Oh and if you know anything about history you should know about the fascist who rose to power by branding his opponents as Marxists and communists. That was in the 1930's and his name as Adolf Hitler! Ever heard of him?

caddilac...if you have kept up with US consumption, you would know that America IS using less oil now than 10 years ago. People continue to drive less and demand has been down at least for the last 3 yrs, maybe more

I wonder if those 10 EU nations include Greece, Portugal, Italy, and some of the other broke ones, so that they can re-sell Iranian oil and make money off of that.

What gives the US the right to dictate to other countries????????

Also, if you include sanctions for some countries you should include sanctions for all countries that buy from Iran.

If the US expects those other countries to use less, because they have to buy less, then the US should either use less oil themselves and provide an example of how to do it or supply those other countries with the oil they won't be getting from Iran.

The US only has about 5% of the worlds population but uses 25% of the oil produced daily.

Use only 10% and that leaves 15% for those other counties to use.

It would seem that it is easy to tell other countries to do with less, but it is another thing to do it yourselves.
